Cinder Review*:
This was a fantastic futuristic re-telling of the fairytale Cinderella but if you’re expecting to read a more traditional retelling, this isn’t it! I haven’t fallen this hard in love with a re-telling since reading Beastly by Alex Flinn (which is a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast).
Cinder takes place in an undisclosed future in which earth is ravaged by an incurable plague with a 100% fatality rate and cyborgs and androids do many menial tasks for humans while being shunned and despised.
The main character, Cinder, a cyborg, is hated by her step mother. Cinder is forced to earn a living as a mechanic and use the money to support her step family. Though life is hard, she experiences a little excitement when Prince Kai asks her to fix his android.Unfortunately, shortly after the meeting Cinder’s sister contracts the plague and her step-mother sells her to the palace for medical testing—research that injects its victims with the virus and promises certain death.
While in the palace, Cinder meets up with Prince Kai again and gets tangled up in his struggle against an alien civilization called Lunar’s. The Lunar queen is determined to marry Prince Kai when he becomes emperor and take over his kingdom. If Prince Kai doesn’t comply, it will mean certain war against the unstoppable Lunar military force.
Cinder follows two storylines which converge – Prince Kai’s struggle to protect his kingdom from the manipulative Lunar’s and Cinder’s journey to break free from her step mother and discover the secrets of her hidden past. While the truth of Cinder’s secret identity felt very obvious, I still really enjoyed reading.
If you’re looking for a fun, imaginative book or an offbeat fairytale retelling, Cinder is an excellent choice!

Variant Review*:
On Benson Fisher’s first day at Maxfield Academy, he quickly leans it’s anything but an ordinary school. There are no adults. And Benson finds out—the hard way—that the school has been divided into gangs in order to survive.
Benson soon discovers the students of Maxfield Academy are prisoners who can’t escape. They’re forced to follow a string of ever changing rules given by an invisible administration and a stern principal who only speaks to them through a TV network and is known only as Iceman. Benson will need all the help he can get to survive, because if anyone disobeys the rules, they are hauled off to detention…and never seen again.
If you are a fan of the Gone series by Michael Grant, don’t miss Variant!

Tankborn Review*:
This interesting story takes place in one of the most unique settings I’ve read in a long time. Tankborn is set in an undisclosed future on a planet very much like earth. A rigid caste system has developed in which Highborns are on the top and Lowborns are on the unprivileged bottom. Some people, called GENS, are grown and genetically modified to contain certain special abilities called ‘skets’. GENS are grown for the sole purpose of serving members of the Lowborn population.
Told from the point of view of three characters, Tankborn is a sci-fi-mystery that ends up revealing secrets about this world that the characters—and the readers—never would’ve imagined._________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Iron Knight Review:
I read the Iron Fey series and absolutely loved it so I eagerly anticipated Ash’s story in The Iron Knight. I’m happy to say Julie Kagawa did not disappoint.
The Iron Knight is the story of fairy prince Ash’s quest to fulfill his promise to Megan to find a way to be with her. This is no easy task as Megan is an iron fairy and iron is lethal to any other type of fey. Ash believes the only way he and Megan can be together is to gain a soul. The Iron Knight takes us on Ash’s heart pounding quest with just the right amount of humor spliced in to the End of the World where he hopes to make the most unlikely of dreams come true. Of course, since no fairy has ever gained a soul Ash’s entire plan could backfire and end up destroying him.
If you are a fan of fantasy, adventure or fairies, don’t miss this series!
