Happy 1st Birthday, Same Page!

Same Page was launched one year ago when eight regional libraries across Nova Scotia joined together to break down interregional barriers and provide Nova Scotia residents with equitable access to library resources – all with one card.

One year ago your catalogue got bigger, better, and easier to use. With Same Page you can:

· Access over 1 million resources from the eight member libraries through a single catalogue.

· Request materials from any member library and have them delivered to your preferred library location, returning them to whichever library is most convenient.

· Access an extensive collection of digital materials and tools from any computer or mobile device with internet access, at any time.

Don’t have your Same Page Card yet?

If you already have a CEHPL Library card: visit any location, phone 902-895-4183, or email info@cehpubliclibrary.ca to switch to Same Page.

Free Menstrual Products Available at all CEHPL Locations

All washrooms at Colchester-East Hants Public Library locations are now offering pads and tampons free to the public.

Funding for this initiative is part of the Provincial Government’s cost of living support to reduce the hardship lower income people experience around period poverty.

Period poverty describes the struggle many people (women, girls, transgender) face while trying to afford menstrual products. Difficulty affording menstrual products can cause people to stay home from school and work, with lasting consequences to their education and economic opportunities.

“We recognize that period poverty is a growing social issue impacting our community,” said Tiffany Bartlett, the library’s CEO. “We are proud to partner with the Province to support this movement for free menstrual products availability across the country.”

Free menstrual products provide access for everyone. People are encouraged to take one for themselves or someone they know.

Freedom to Read 2023

What is Intellectual Freedom and Freedom to Read?

Intellectual freedom is the right to access information and ideas from all points of view without restrictions. At the core of intellectual freedom is the belief and trust that people have the ability to assess and analyze information and ideas in order to make informed decisions. In Canada, our intellectual freedom rights are protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (opens a new window).

To help Canadians recognize and reflect on the importance of intellectual freedom, and to bring awareness to censorship, Freedom to Read Week was developed. Freedom to Read Week (Sunday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 25) is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom.

But don’t let the one-week celebration fool you—we should be committed to intellectual freedom year-round.

Challenged materials

Books, magazines, newspapers, and other materials are challenged in Canada and around the world all the time. Each challenge seeks to limit public access to materials in schools, libraries, or bookstores.

For every book published, there are countless opinions about its content. This is why it is the Canadian Court of Law that determines which books are restricted, and not your local library. Libraries are not here to tell you what you can and cannot read. We are here to uphold intellectual freedom and to support people’s curiosity at every stage of life.

Access to Knowledge, Thought, Creativity (and Joy!)

As a vital community connection to the world of information and ideas, Colchester-East Hants Public Library is committed to providing access to knowledge, thought, and creativity for the purposes of learning, inspiration, and enjoyment.
